If you live in the UK and your marriage is breaking down, you can usually apply for divorce here even if you married in Poland. Since April 2022, England and Wales use a 'no-fault' divorce system: you no longer need to prove blame. One person (or both jointly) states that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, and the court process follows a fixed timetable.
The process is handled mostly online, but the forms, deadlines and legal terms can feel overwhelming - especially in a second language. That is where we come in.

The other spouse confirms receipt. A 20-week period then runs before the next step.

Conditional order
The court confirms you are entitled to divorce.

Final order
Six weeks later you can apply for the final order, which legally ends the marriage.

A straightforward no-fault divorce takes around 6 to 8 months because of the built-in waiting periods.
